When it comes to demonstrating care and concern for our homeless brothers and sisters, ministries of charity and of justice are equally important to us. Each Tuesday, from 11am - 1pm, volunteers distribute over 120 sack lunches (as well as personal hygiene items and clothing as available) to homeless adults who call the streets of Hollywood home. On other days our church staff refers homeless adults and families to shelters and to neighboring congregations who offer a similar hunger ministry.
If you are looking for ways to help, but are not available on Tuesday mornings, we always need donations of the following:

We also have a bi-monthly ministry opportunity we call PATH Cooks. Every other month (remaining 2011 date: December 4th) we prepare and serve dinner for the residents at the PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) Facility in Hollywood. We gather in the main kitchen at HUMC at 2:00pm on a Sunday afternoon, prepare a delicious meal, then transport it over to the PATH facility and serve dinner (at about 5pm). We're always happy to have new hands, and faces, help out with this ministry. Please email Laura for more information.

While this important ministry of outreach is extremely important - we also recognize that there is much work to be done to eliminate the causes of homelessness and create much needed affordable housing in Hollywood. To that end, we have been a leader in shaping the vision of an interfaith task force on homelessness in Hollywood. Partnering with LA VOICE (a PICO organization), we have helped to mobilize sister congregations and build public support for the creation of supportive services and permanent supportive housing in our community. Strategy and organizing meetings are held regularly here at the church.
