We are thrilled you are interested in HUMC and being a part of our welcoming community of faith.
Below are a few thoughts from one of our new members on why joining the church is an important step of faith:
"I’m not by nature a 'joiner.' I have proof of this. Even now, there are in my inbox, over 25 invitations to join “Linked-In,” none of which I’ve responded to. I’m always a little concerned that whatever it is I’m joining is going to (a) eat up precious time (b) become a huge hassle or (c) that I’ll suddenly realize, after I’ve joined that I don’t agree with a single principle the group stands for.
I was raised in the church. Not this church. A very different church; very small, very conservative, very excitable. There was a lot of talk about how wretched life was. But there was some good news: If you hung around and suffered long enough, eventually you got to die and go to Heaven. Jesus seemed like a nice-enough guy, but you had to look out for his father who seemed to have a very short temper and a very long memory.
It was sort of hard to relax, knowing that God knew everything you thought and did and wrote it all down in his big book. By age thirteen, I was pretty sure I had a record that would guarantee me a one-way ticket on the express train to Hell. Hence, I took a little vacation from the church. It lasted about twenty-five years. When I first walked into Hollywood UMC, I was struck by how beautiful it was. Soon, I was struck by how lovely it was to hear messages of inclusion, diversity and social justice ringing from the pulpit like bells.
Every Sunday, I am grateful to be reminded, encouraged, nudged to be a better person; to open my heart; open my hands; to show up; to give and to receive. I rather like that we are reminded to show faith; not just in something greater, but in each other. Life is, after all about choices, isn’t it? So this year I decided to give myself the gift of choosing a place to belong. And I choose this place."

If you have been worshiping with us for a while and are interested in becoming a member of Hollywood UMC, there are three ways to unite with the church:
Profession of Faith (or Confirmation for youth)
If you've been a member of any church, you can join by professing Jesus Christ as your Savior.
Renewal of Vows
If you once belonged to a church but are currently inactive, you can join by renewing your Christian vows.
Transfer of Membership
Members of a United Methodist Church or another denomination may have their membership moved to Hollywood UMC. In case of transfer from other denominations or other UM churches, our office will contact your former church indicating your desire to have your membership transferred.
Affiliate of Associate Member
If you have reason to retain your membership in another church (such as your hometown church if you've relocated for an extended period), you can become an affiliate or associate member of Hollywood UMC.
Baptism
At Hollywood UMC, we baptize adults by sprinkling or pouring. If you have been baptized, it is not necessary to be baptized again. If you have not been baptized, you can be baptized when you join.
Prospective members are asked to attend a
Coffee with the Pastor as well as the
Exploring Membership class, taught by the pastoral staff, and held as needed on Sunday afternoons.
